Hello from Thailand! Well, I'm no longer in India and I've safely arrived in Bangkok. The flight from Delhi was uneventful...for Delhi. Arrived early this morning (around 8am local time) after leaving at 1am Delhi time...so that means not a lot of sleep!
The hotel is absolutely fabulous, I have a 12th floor corner suite with 3 huge windows, each with a different view of the river and downtown Bangkok. A huge living room and an even larger bedroom...with 2 bathrooms and a bidet (anyone want to send instructions along on how to use that, feel free). About the only downside is the view of the two pools...which currently are occupied by a number of Euros who feel the need to lay spread eagle while wearing speedos.
Much like Delhi, it's hard not to feel like everyone is trying to get one over on you. I know the cab driver on the way to the Grand Palace ripped me off, and then when I got to the Grand Palace three people immediately tried to steer me in the wrong direction. But, I did finally arrive in one piece and what an amazing place.
The Grand Palace is a group of buildings that served as the official residence of the King of Thailand from the 18th to the 20th century. There are ornate buildings, carvings, buddhas, and historical paintings. I spent around 3 hours walking (and sweating!) the grounds, going around twice with different lenses to capture different views. I then risk my life by taking a rickshaw back to the hotel, and let's just say when the driver plays chicken with a 4 ton bus...you start to rethink that decision. Especially when you can reach out and touch another 4 ton bus right next to you! But, it was a lot quicker than the cab and I was able to set my price.
I feel somewhat guilty wasting the afternoon in the hotel, but I'm beat. Long two weeks in India, long flight with little sleep, and it was hot as hell while walking the palace (seriously, I don't think I've ever sweet as much as I have the last few weeks) with not enough water. So, I'm thinking of heading down to the pool (with the speedo boys...but I'll just go with the regular shorts), sipping a few beers and relax.
This shot here is from the Grand Palace in Bangkok. At some point I'll jot down what building it's in front of...but I'm tired!
