What did you do tonight? This was my evening...after a nice long drive up to Lone Pine along the 395 (one of my favorite highways) I spent the afternoon doing some shooting and location scouting for tomorrow morning. As the sun went down I noticed Venus rising over the Eastern Sierra's...so I stuck around for a little while. As the sky turned dark I was blown away. I live in a huge metropolis, stars are some small twinkling lights drowned out by the light pollution...I was not prepared for what I saw. It's a moonless night and the closest town, a small one at that, is 10 or so miles away. Thousands...and thousands...and thousands...of stars. So many stars they appeared to form clouds. So I put the IPOD on the stellar new Neil Young Live at Massey Hall album I picked up this morning before taking off, popped a few beers, and took some long exposures while staring up at the sky.

The faint silhouette you see at the bottom are the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and unfortunately the small sizes available in flickr just don't do justice to the spectacular scene I was presented with. They say that sometimes you witness a scene that makes you feel small...but I actually didn't feel small, but more in awe. I have a feeling that a little more camping in remote areas is going to be in order....I could have sat there all night just staring at the stars.
