At 14,496 ft. Mt. Whitney is the tallest peak in the lower 48. Due to it's accessibility, it is one of the most climbed peaks in the Sierra Nevada, if not the US. In an interesting coincidence, Mt. Whitney is less than 150 miles from Badwater in Death Valley, the lowest point in North America, at 282 feet below sea level.

For the insane, the Badwater Ultramarathon picks the hottest month, July, where temperatures can rise to 130 degrees Farenheit (54.5 C) and holds an ultramarathon race from Badwater to Whitney Portal (the trailhead for hiking the summit of Mt. Whitney).

This shot was taken from the Alabama Hills just after sunrise. Converted to black and white using power retouche pro. A similar shot of Lone Pine Peak can be seen here.
